Why convert a JPG to PNG?
JPG re-compresses every time you save it, so a photo that's been edited a few times can pick up visible blur or blocky artifacts around sharp edges. Converting to PNG locks in whatever quality is left and stops any further loss — useful before you run it through another round of editing.
It's also the move if you need transparency: a JPG background is always opaque, but once it's a PNG you (or an image editor) can cut out the background and get a real transparent layer to work with.
